The government plans to set up a geothermal fund to help accelerate geothermal exploration activities in the country amid lack of interest among investors partly due to the huge funding requirement, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Tuesday.

The paper quoted Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said as saying that the geothermal fund will be financed by the state budget. Other funding sources include the Ministry of Finance?s Government Investment Center (PIP), investors, and donor institutions whose mission is to promote clean energy.

Speaking at a hearing with the House of Representatives Commission VII on energy and mining, Sudirman said that of the Rp 10 trillion allocated by the state budget for new and renewable energy, about half could be dedicated for the geothermal fund. (*)
