SGX-listed KS Orka Renewables Pte Ltd (KS Orka) has completed drilling three exploration wells at the Sorik Merapi geothermal project, in Mandailing Natal, North Sumatra Province, according to an official at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

?Drilling of three wells in Sorik Marapi has been completed, testing of the wells is now ongoing,? Director of Geothermal at the Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy at the ministry Yunus Saefulhak to Petromindo.com on Wednesday.

Previously, spokesperson of KS Orka, Syahrini Nuryanti said that well testing will be carried out after drilling of the second well has been completed because the second well is necessary to drain the water.

The company said earlier in a statement that the first drilling rig operated by Dati was proceeding with drilling works on pad A and another drilling rig from KS Drilling was being mobilized for another area in the concession, pad E.

According to Syahrini, her company plans at this early stage to drill four exploration wells. "However, if the results of the drilling are good, then the company is likely to drill more wells until 7-11," she said.

KS Orka currently owns the 240 MW Sorik geothermal power plant project in North Sumatra, following the acquisition of 100 percent of PT OTP Geothermal Pte Ltd from Origin Energy Geothermal Singapore Pte Ltd and Tata Power International Pte Ltd. PT OTP Geothermal owns 95 percent of PT Sorik Merapi Geothermal Power, the owner of the Sorik geothermal power plant project.

KS Orka is a joint venture between Hugar Orka ehf, an Icelandic company and Zhejiang Kaishan Compressor Co., Ltd (Kaishan), which is listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange. KS Orka combines the Icelandic knowledge in geothermal development with Kaishan?s power plant technology and manufacturing expertise to form Asia?s only vertically integrated geothermal and waste energy company. KS Orka brings to the project some of the most experienced geothermal experts and power project developers in the world.
