PGE kicks off Karaha geothermal project

PT.Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) kicked off on Dec. 31, 2014 the development of PLTP Karaha Project, including a 1x30 MW geothermal power plant and and its Steam Gathering System, in Tasikmalaya and Garut regencies, West Java.

The EPC contractor of the project is the consortium of PT Alstom Power Energy System Indonesia and Alstom Power System SA.

The project is scheduled for completion in 2016. Once finished, the power plant will generate US$28.9 million in revenue for PGE each year over a contract period of 30 years.

The project was previously called Karaha Bodas. It was suspended during the Asian economic crisis in 1998. PGE resumed the project at the behest of the government.

PGE?s President Director Rony Gunawan said including PLTP Karaha, the firm is now developing five projects. The four others are PLTP Kamojang (1x35 MW), PLTP Ulubelu (2x55 MW), PLTP Lumut Balai (1x55 MW) and PLTP Lahendong (2x20 MW). Once finished all the projects will generate a total of $215 million in revenue per year starting end 2016 under the Heads of Agreement (HoA) between the firm and state owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN).
