RI, NZ to bolster geothermal cooperation

Indonesia and neighboring country New Zealand will increase cooperation to help develop the former?s huge geothermal energy potential.

The Office of the Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs said in a statement Saturday that this was one of the results of a meeting Friday between Minister Indroyono Soesilo and New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia, Trevor Matheson.

The ministry said that the geothermal cooperation includes in the area of geothermal power plant engineering design, and studies on the social and cultural impact of geothermal power plant projects to the local community as well as the techno-economic aspect.

Indonesia has huge geothermal potential as it is located in the so-called ?Ring of Fire.? One of the companies have aggressive plan to tap into the country?s geothermal potential is state-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina, which has allocated US$2.5 billion for investment in the sector until 2019 as the company seeks to boost the capacity of its geothermal power plants to 907 MW from the current 505 MW.
