2023 Indonesia Minerals Mining Conference
Mineral Mining Outlook after Export Ban
We would like to invite you to attend the 2023 Indonesia Minerals Mining outlook conference that will be held on May 25 in Shangri-la Hotel Jakarta.
The conference will take a focus to explore the future of strategic minerals such as bauxite, nickel, gold, tin and copper in conjunction with a three-year implementation of the 2020 Mining Law.
According to the Mining Law No 3/2020, the government is supposed to ban the export of unrefined mineral commodities starting June 2023 to push the development of domestic processing industries and allow the country to generate greater added value from the mineral commodities.
President Joko Widodo has already announced the government’s plan to ban bauxite ore export starting June 2023. The government estimated the state revenue will increase from Rp 21 trillion to around Rp 62 trillion with the planned export ban.
The government argues that the bauxite export ban policy was made taking into account the benefits of the nickel export ban policy that has been implemented since January 2020 to the domestic economy.
Before the nickel ore export ban took effect, the government said that export value generated from nickel export was only around US$1.1 billion or Rp 17 trillion. But after the export ban took effect and the nickel ore was processed domestically, the export value of nickel jumped 19 times to $20.9 billion or Rp 326 trillion.
The government is also considering banning the export of copper concentrates, tin ingot and gold. But discussions about the export ban are still ongoing since the required domestic smelters have yet to be completed.
Conference Focuses:
- Government’s roadmap on bauxite industry: – what is the future of downstream industry with the export ban on bauxite ore?
- Supply and demand forecasts for nickel, cobalt and manganese and their roles in energy transition in Indonesia.
- The potential of lithium imports to support the development of the domestic electric vehicle battery industry in Indonesia.
- Update on the planned nickel export tax – what are the possible implications to the future of nickel industry from upstream to downstream sectors?
- The 2023 gold industry outlook -- what are the opportunities for the gold industry in Indonesia?
- Government’s strategies to support the gold industry, new plans for exploration and operation projects.
- Exploring investment opportunities in nickel, bauxite, tin, gold and copper.
- Current status and future prospects of tin downstream industry in Indonesia.
- Exploring the strategic program of tin export ban.
- ESG expectations for the Indonesian mineral mining industry.
