Background

While Kalimantan contributes about 91 percent to the country's annual coal production, Sumatra, as it turns out, holds higher coal reserves than Kalimantan. The meager coal output from Sumatra is largely due to the lack of infrastructure since most coal miners traditionally rely on road for coal transport. The recent ban on public road usage by coal trucks then forced several mines in Jambi and South Sumatra to reduce and cease operation. The others problems needed to be resolved are land acquisition and borrow use forest permits.

The government has issued a series of policies such as Master plan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesian Economic Development (MP3EI), Law No.2/2012 on acquisition of Land for Development in the Public Interest and the establishment of Indonesia Infrastructure Guarantee Fund (IIGF) to give certainty for the development of infrastructure including in Sumatra. The policies aimed to help accelerate the developments of infrastructure projects that include coal railway, port and mine-mouth power plant.

The 2nd edition of the conference, which will bring together stakeholders from coal mining players, officials and experts, will discuss ways to settle problems that would pave way for Sumatra in ramping up coal production. The conference will also assess investment opportunities in coal mining sector and infrastructure development in Sumatra.

The other interesting topics are to discuss the opportunities to develop underground mining, aimed at enabling mining companies to mine coal or mineral deposit situated under protected forests.
