10 foreign firms sign MOUs on construction of coal-fired power plants

As many as ten foreign companies from China, Japan and India have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to build part of several coal-fired power plants to be developed under the government's crash program designed to provide additional power supply of up to 10,000 megawatt by 2009.

State-owned electricity company PLN's acting president director Djuanda Nugraha Ibrahim said in Jakarta Wednesday that the ten companies were Herbin Power Co., Shanghai Electricity Corp., and Dongfang Electricity from China, Marubeni, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Sumitomo, Hitachi and Itochu from Japan and Essar from India.

"We hope their offering price will be attractive to us. But the most important thing is that they also have to commit to provide the financing for the power projects," he said.

Chinese companies have offered a price of between US$600 and $700 per MW for the construction of the steam power plants.

Djuanda said that PLN was consulting with the director general of coal and geothermal and the Indonesian coal mining association (APBI) to set the standard price for the coal supply.

Separately, PLN's spokesman Muljo Adji said that the tender for the development of 10 coal-fired power plants as part of the crash program had been delayed for two weeks to July 21 from the initial schedule of July 14 because the number of bidders was far higher than the originally estimated.
