As many as 15 mining workers have been killed in accidents in Indonesia since January of this year, much higher than in 2001, a government official told Petromindo.Com on Wednesday.
Suyartono, director of mineral and coal affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said supervisors at mining projects had become less and less careful about workers? safety.
Only some seven mining workers had been killed in accidents at their workplaces in 2001, Suyartono said.
Suyartono said his office had planned to introduced a program to standardize the competence of operational managers and supervisors at mining projects.
His remarks were in response to Sunday?s landslide at Berau Coal?s Binungan mine in East Kalimantan in which three workers were killed. They were from PT. Bukit Makmur, mining contractors of Berau Coal. (godang)
