As many as 27 mining, special port and plantation companies in Tanah Bumbu regency, South Kalimantan have been temporarily prohibited from running their operation for not having proper documents on environmental impact assessment (Amdal).

Rachmadi Kurdi, Head of the Environment Office in Tanah Bumbu regency, said on Thursday that the ban was issued after the office found that Amdal documents of the 27 companies were obtained through improper procedures.

He said that the office of the minister for environmental affairs had also ordered the removal of the Amdal commission for issuing the improper Amdal documents to the 27 companies.

Rachmadi said that the Amdal commission was appointed by the local authority to supervise the companies in the regency to carry out environmental impact analyses in order to be able to get Amdal documents as one of requirements needed to carry out their business activities.

But the commission did not conduct its assigned duties properly. It instead issued Amdal documents to 27 companies even though they did not carry out environmental analysis as required to obtain Amdal documents.

Meanwhile Media Indonesia daily reported that South Kalimantan Governor Rudy Ariffin had formally issued a decision to revoke the license of the Amdal commission in the Tanah Bumbu regency.

"As the follow-up of the instruction of the minister for environmental affairs, the governor has formally issued a letter on the revocation of the Amdal commission?s license,? Rahmadi said in a different occasion.

With the revocation, Amdal license in the regency will be taken over by the province?s office for environmental affairs, he added.
