About 36 companies are participating in the pre-qualification phase of the tender for 3-year contract(s) to supply between 4 and 5 million tons of coal per year to the 3,400-megawatt Suralaya power plant in Banten, a company official said Monday.

PT Indonesia Power operation director Achmad Sadikin said the qualified bidders would be announced early next month, while the winner(s) is scheduled to be announced in August.

Earlier Achmad said the contracts would replace those held by PT Kideco Jaya Agung, PT Adaro Indonesia and PT Berau Coal, which are due at the end of this year.

He also said the first coal delivery under the new contracts to come in early 2006.

The Suralaya consumes about 10 million tons of coal per year, 60 percent of which came from state-owned coal miner PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA) and the rest from the three companies. The contract with PTBA expires in 2014. (godang/dino)
