A total of 2,474 IUP mining business permits face the risk of being revoked by the government if provincial governments fail to give the so-called clean and clear (C&C) recommendation to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources by the January 2, 2017 deadline, Kontan reported on Monday.
?If the provincial administration could not provide the recommendation by the last second, the government will revoke (the IUPs),? Director General of Mineral and Coal at the ministry, Bambang Gatot Ariyono told the paper on Sunday.
The government over the past few years has been struggling to clean up problematic IUP mining permits in the country issued by regional governments after they obtained regional autonomy power. Many of the permits, however, turned problematic among others due to overlapping problem including with forest areas, and lack proper documentations, and that the miners failed to pay their financial obligations to the state properly.
The provincial governments have been given authority to sort out the mess, giving recommendation which IUPs should be declared as clean and clear, meaning that the miners have met all the required documents and fulfilled their financial obligations to the state and that the permits are not overlapping with other permits or forest areas, and which should be revoked. The deadline has been set for January 2 of next year, and there are currently a total of 2,474 IUPs which have yet to get the clean and clear status. (*)
