Hasyim bin Daud of the Manduin village, Muara Harus sub district, Tabalong district, South Kalimantan Province, filed on Monday a legal suit at the local Amuntai Court against coal mining giant PT Adaro Indonesia.

Hasyim demanded Adaro to pay Rp 1.6 billion as a compensation for polluting his farming land.

The local Banjarmasin Post daily quoted Hasyim legal advisor Fitra Hadisurya as saying that his client had to take the legal action because earlier attempts to complain to the company directly had been fruitless.

Fitra said that Hasyim had been relying on his farmland to support his family. But Fitra said that the plants in Hasyim's land had been polluted by coal dust since Adaro developed coal road near the farming land. The road had also disrupt the drainage system, causing flood in the farming land. (*)
