Aceh governor inaugurates new power substation

Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf inaugurated on Friday operation of a new 275/150 kV Ulee Kareng substation in Bakoy, Aceh Besar Regency.

Irwandi said that the new substation is expected to help resolve the lingering electricity crisis in the province.

?Power demand in Aceh is estimated at 372 MW, but supply currently stands at only 317 MW. Hopefully, the Ulee Kareng substation can help resolve the power shortage in Aceh,? he said in a statement.

The new substation forms part of electricity infrastructure facilities being developed in Sumatra, stretching from Lampung to Aceh.

He also said that new power plants are expected to be developed in Aceh, which has potential for hydropower, geothermal and wind energy.

The power shortage in Aceh has been worsened due to trouble at the Nagan Raya coal-fired power plant, which currently runs at only 70 MW, far below than its designed capacity of 200 MW.
