Coal mining giant PT Adaro Indonesia, the country?s largest coal miner operating in South Kalimantan, has not implemented land reclamation program despite dozens of years operating in the North Hulu Sungai regency, the local Banjarmasin Post daily reported Wednesday.
The paper said that the company?s ex-mining locations turned into mud holes filled with water, looking like lake.
The paper said that there?s been rising concern among the local people of the environmental impact of the company?s carelessness.
Local North Hulu Sungai regency legislator Morhan HK criticized Adaro for not implementing the land reclamation program, saying the company had only been making investment to reap huge profit from the area, without intention to protect the environment.
Company officials were not available for comment.(*)
