Adaro eyes $4 billion power project in South Sumatra

IDX-listed coal mining firm PT Adaro Energy Tbk. is taking part in a tender for the construction and operation of a coal-fired power plant in South Sumatra, Kontan reported on Thursday.

Adaro?s President Director Garibaldi Thohir said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the power plant which would have a capacity of 3x600 megawatt would be built with a total cost of between US$3 billion and $4 billion.

He said that a number of foreign companies had expressed their interest to team up with Adaro to build the power plant which would operate as an independent power producer (IPP) and would sell its power produced to the state owned electricity company PLN.

The South Sumatra power plant will be Adaro?s second largest power plant project after the Central Java coal-fired power plant which will have a capacity of 2x1000 megawatt. The construction of the power plant is expected to begin in October, 2013 and is scheduled for completion in 2017.

In the Central Java power plant, Adaro teams up with Japanese companies JPower and Itochu. The project also receives financing facilities from Japanese banks including Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

In addition, Adaro is also currently preparing the construction of a coal-fired power plant with capacity of 2x100 MW in South Kalimantan. The $400 million project is expected to start this year. (*)
