Indonesia-listed energy firm PT Adaro Energy announced Thursday that the coal production from its South Kalimantan coal mine unit PT Adaro Indonesia (AI) increased 5 percent compared to the same period of last year to 22.8 million tonnes.

?We are on track to achieve our production target for this year of 46-48 million tonnes,? Adaro said in a statement.

During the second quarter of 2011, coal production climbed 19% to a record 12.2 million tonnes. Overburden removal climbed 30% to a record 75.4 million bank cubic metres (bcm). ?The arrival of new and larger sized heavy equipment combined with our contractors' good performance enabled us to increase volumes,? it said.

In line with stronger production, sales volume rose 27% and 10% to a record 13.11 million tonnes and 24.02 million tonnes during the second quarter and first half of 2011, respectively.

E 4000 or Wara coal continues to receive strong demand from countries such as India, China, South Korea and Indonesia. As well, in the second quarter of 2011, Adaro secured a new Wara contract with Thailand. (denny)
