A 2x100 MW coal-fired power plant project in Tabalong, South Kalimantan, being developed by PT Tanjung Power Indnesia (TPI), will require about 1 million tons of coal per year once it starts full operation.

?The power plant will absorb at least 1 million tons of coal,? said Garibaldi Tohir, President Director of IDX-listed coal giant PT Adaro Energy Tbk.

Adaro Energy through subsidiary PT Adaro Power owns 65 percent of TPI, while the remaining 35 percent is owned by PT East-West Power Indonesia, a subsidiary of Korea East-West Power Co Ltd. As reported earlier, TPI on January 23 reached financing close with six lenders, obtaining a total of US$422 million loan facilities for the estimated $545 million power plant project, which is targeted to be completed and begins operation in the first semester of 2019.

The coal for the power plant will be supplied by Adaro Energy?s coal subsidiary PT Adaro Indonesia.

Garibaldi said that in the long-term about half of Adaro?s coal output will be allocated for the group?s power plant projects developed by Adaro Power. Adaro through joint venture firm PT Bhimasena Power Indonesia is currently developing a 2x1000 MW coal-fired power plant in Batang, Central Java, which will require annual coal supply of 8 million tons.

He said that in the longer run, Adaro Power is projected to manage a total of 20,000 MW of power plants, although in the short term until 2020 the company is expected to only operate 5,000 MW of power plants.
