Adaro to participate in tender for mine mouth power plant projects

Independent power producer PT Adaro Power said it will participate in tender for mine mouth power plant projects located in East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and South Sumatra to be held by state-owned electricity firm PT PLN this year.
The company is eying planned power plant projects in the specific three provinces because the coal mines of its parent, IDX-listed coal giant PT Adaro Energy Tbk, are located there.
Adaro Power Vice President Director Dharma Djojonegoro said on Thursday that the company is seeking to partner with PLN subsidiaries in the mine mouth power plant projects. ?The tender ruling is now different. We?ll compete (with other firms) to become partner of PLN subsidiaries assigned to develop mine mouth power plants,? he said.
Under the 2017-2026 electricity procurement business plan (or RUPTL) of PLN, the utility is targeted to procure an additional of 7,000 MW of electricity from 16 mine mouth power plants in Sumatra and Kalimantan. PLN will hold tender or directly appoint developers for the planned IPP mine mouth projects. Some of the projects will be directly assigned to its subsidiaries PT Indonesia Power and PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali, which can seek partner.
Dharma said that Adaro Energy is also open to possibility for PLN to acquire part of its coal concessions to support the planned mine mouth power plant projects. He acknowledged that the company has been engaged in early talks with PLN for such possible acquisition with the outlook that PLN will acquire more than 50 percent shares. ?It looks like our mine in East Kalimantan is ready to be acquired by PLN,? he said.
PLN Procurement Director Supangkat Iwan Santoso confirmed that the planned acquisition has been discussed at the company?s board of directors. He said that PLN was eying three coal mines located in Sumatra and Kalimantan.
