Alsons to expand power business in Indonesia

Philippines firm Alsons Consolidated Resources Inc. will expand its power generation business in Indonesia.

Tomas I. Alcantara, Alsons chairman, said the company is keen on putting up a coal or a natural gas power plant in Indonesia to complement its 60-megawatt diesel-fired generating facility in the country.

Alsons controls a majority stake in a diesel plant in South Sulawesi under a joint venture deal with Toyodo Tsusho Corp., the trading arm of Japanese manufacturer Toyota. The facility is an independent power producer contracted by Indonesia's Perusahaan Listrik Negara.

"The community is growing so there is a looming increase in requirement," he said as quoted by Philippines media.

In the Philippines, Alsons will pursue several projects to increase its generation capacity from 155 megawatts to 555 megawatts by 2016. (*)
