State-owned mining company PT Aneka Tambang's (Antam) Pongkor gold mining processing unit and underground pit mining unit have secured ISO 9002 quality assurance certificates from Quality Assurance Services (QAS), making Antam the first mining company in Indonesia that gets ISO award for its underground pit mining activities.
Antam president Dedi Aditya Sumanagara said the Pongkor pit mining unit started to build quality assurance management system in March 1998, and in the end of the year, Antam invited QAS to evaluate the system.
However, pre-audit by QAS that was slated for early 1999 could only be implemented one year later, namely in February, 2000, as in early 1999 Pongkor was hit by riots that destroyed a number of buildings and vehicles.
"With the final assessment in February, 2000, it was decided that Pongkor was entitled to get ISO 9002 certification for its underground pit mining and its gold processing facilities," Dedi said.
"I'm proud and thankful of this because in such a difficult time, Pongkor employees are still committed to building quality assurance management system, that would eventually not only improve the company's image but also the quality of gold it produces," he added.
Antam has secured a number of quality certificates, including London Bullion Market
Association (LBMA) Certificate that it received on Jan. 1, 1999. The LBMA certificate was given for Antam's gold products. With the certification, Antam gold is listed in the London Gold Delivery List for Gold, and can be sold around the world.
Antam booked a net profit of Rp 212.78 billion for the first semester of this year, almost four times larger (362 percent) than the Rp 58.77 billion net profit booked in the same period of last year. (*)
