IDX-listed mining firm PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (Antam) is considering to develop a stainless steel plant in North Kalimantan, which offers cheap source of hydro-based electricity.
Antam President Director Tedy Badrujaman said that the company wants to further process its nickel products into stainless steel. ?But we must have cheap source of energy (to realize the plan),? he told Petromindo.com recently.
He said that Antam was considering a stainless steel plant with production capacity of 2-3 million tons per year. The nickel raw material will come from its nickel smelters in Sulawesi and North Maluku.
He added that alternatively, the company may also consider to develop a new nickel smelter in North Kalimantan. No further details were provided.
