Stated owned miner PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (Antam) said that its alumina smelter in Tayan West Kalimantan, to be operated jointly with Russia’s mining firm United Company RusAl, is expected to have a production capacity of between 1 and 1.2 million tons per year, with a minimum investment of US$1.2 billion.

“Under our (business) plan, the alumina smelter plant’s production capacity of between 1 and 1.2 million tons will be reached within three years,” said Antam’s president director Deddy Aditya Sumanagara in Jakarta Tuesday.

Deddy said that the alumina produced by the plant would prioritize to meet the alumina demand from domestic market.

The signing of the cooperation agreement on the construction of the alumina smelter plant would be conducted to coincide with the state visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to this week.

According to Deddy, a feasibility study will take around one year since the signing of the cooperation agreement. “If the feasibility study recommend for further steps, then we will kick off the project,” he said.

Besides RusAl, Antam is also exploring the possibility of partnering with Chinese investor to build another alumina smelter plant with a capacity of 600,000 tons in West Kalimantan . He refused to mention the name of Chinese company.

Antam has also established a consortium with two Japanese companies Showa Denko KK (SDK) and Marubeni Corporation and Singapore’s company Straits Trading Amalgamated Resources Private Limited (STAR), to construct a chemical grade alumina (CGA) plant in Tayan, West Kalimantan. The four companies signed the cooperation deal on March 31, 2006.

The CGA plant project with a capacity of 300,000 tons need an estimated investment of US$220 million. The construction of the CGA plant is targeted to begin in the second quarter of 2009 so that it will commence operation in 2010.

The production of CGA plant will increase to 600,000 tons per year in few years later, he said, adding that the consortium is in the process of selecting an EPC contractor to build the plant. (godang)
