The state owned gold and copper mining company PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) will continue with its plans to develop the PLTA Lasolo hydro power generation unit in Kendari regency, Southeast Sulawesi province.

The Antara news agency quoted Southeast Sulawesi Governor La Ode Kaimoeddin as saying that Antam was still looking for foreign partners to help finance the project.

The project was supposed to be developed in 1997 with the financial support from Japanese consortium, but was canceled following the outbreak of the Asian financial crisis in the middle of the year.

Kaimoeddin said that his administration and Antam were trying to assure the Japanese consortium to finance the project.

"The Japanese government seems to be concerned about our social and political condition," he said.

Antam planned to use 50 MW of the 96 MW power plant to empower its ferronickel unit I and II plant in Pomalaa, Southeast Sulawesi. The plant has a production capacity of 11,000 tons per year.

The power plant was also supposed to empower the unit III 11,000 tons per year ferronickel plant which is still under construction.

The remaining capacity of the power plant would be allocated for public consumption in the Southeast Sulawesi province. (*)
