State-owned general mining firm PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) has urged Tessag Industrie-Anlagen Gmbh of Germany as the winner in the tender to construct Antam's Ferro-nickel III plant to involve local contractors in the project.
Antam president Deddy Aditya Sumanagara said by involving local contractors in the project, Tessag would help empower them. In addition, the involvement of local contractors had been stipulated in the contract.
"The contract requires the winner of the tender to involve local contractors," Deddy said.
Tessag Industrie-Anlagen Gmbh, formerly known as Klockner Ina-subsidiari of Tessag AG, has been named the winner for engineering, procurement & construction (EPC) of the Ferro-nickel III plant in Pomalaa, Southeast Sulawesi.
Tessag, part of the RWE Group, has 50 years of experience in international EPC business. The last project it did in Indonesia was the US$1 billion Musi pulp project in South Sumatra.
The construction of the Pomalaa Ferro-nickel project, estimated to value at US$150 million, will start after financial closure expected to be in the middle of this year. The plant would start its commercial production by the end of 2003. This plant would more than double Antam's nickel production from 11,000 tons per annum to 24,000 tons.
To support the operation of Ferro-nickel III plant, Antam would build diesel-powered power plant in Pomalaa to supply electricity to the Ferro-nickel plant. The construction of the power plant would be carried out by a joint venture company of Nations Energy of the United States, Ibra Tata Perkasa, MAN of Germany and Antam. (*)
