Anti-American protests in Jakarta and other major cities have mounted despite calls from the country?s leaders to cool down, Media Indonesia reported on Friday.

In Pekanbaru, Riau, hundreds of students of the University of Riau staged their protest in front of the province?s Legislative Council. They also threatened to attack American residents working with PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia if the U.S. attacked Afghanistan.

?If America attacks Afghanistan, it means the country attacks its own citizens in foreign countries,? one of the Riau students said in the protest.

Offices of Caltex in Riau have been under a tight security guard amid the growing anti-American sentiment in the province. The police also provide an extra security protection against about 110 foreigners working with the oil giant.

In addition, about 400 police members are also deployed to guard the oil company?s oil fields in the province.

Caltex, which is equally owned by U.S. energy giant Chevron and Texaco, produces more than half of Indonesian oil output. (*)
