Minister of Mines and Energy Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono launched on Monday a three-day training for the newly established anti fuel smuggling team.

The 40-strong team, comprising officials of the ministry, state oil and gas company Pertamina, public prosecutors, military members, was formed to combat fuel smuggling and other fuel-related offenses.

The ministry's expert staff Slamet Singgih serves as chairman of the team with the ministry's inspector general Muzani Syukur as coordinator.

The team was formed in response to the public's outcry over the rampant fuel smuggling, which had reportedly caused trillions of rupiah of losses on the government.

The government's policy of subsidizing fuel price in the country was considered as the main reason behind the illegal fuel exports. (*)
