The JSX listed drilling company PT Apexindo Pratama Duta said Thursday its "Maera" swamp barge rig had started drilling in East Kalimantan Tunu gas field operated by TotalFinaElf E&P Indonesie.

Drilling commenced March 15, around one month after the barge arrived in Tunu from Singapore where it was refurbished for six months. It caught fire early last year while drilling a gas well in Tunu.

Apexindo president director Hertriono Kartowisastro said in a press statement released Thursday that Maera would continue drilling for around 17 months in accordance with Apexindo contract with TotalFinaElf.

The Tunu field is situated at the delta of the Mahakam River on the Mahakam block, which is jointly operated by TotalFinaElf and Japan Inpex.

Apexindo is a subsidiary of publicly listed oil and gas producer PT Medco Energi International.(*)
