The government expects to see a number of new power plants with a total capacity of 5,459 MW starting operation from August through December this year, the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) said in a statement on Thursday.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources data show that in the past August, new capacities totaling 678 MW were scheduled to enter Commercial Operation Date (COD). This will be followed by the COD of new capacities totaling 414 MW in September or this month, and 924 MW in October, and 803 MW in November and 1,328 MW in December.

In the first seven months of the year (from January through July), several power plants with a combined capacity of 1,312 MW entered COD, according to the statement.

The government also expects to see the signing of Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) for power plant projects with a total capacity of 22,728 MW from August through December this year and the groundbreaking of 5,990 MW power projects during the period with breakdown as follows:
1. In August, a total capacity of 3,136 MW was scheduled for PPA signing and 2,100 MW for groundbreaking
2. In September or this month, 1,350 is scheduled for PPA signing and 1,650 MW for groundbreaking
3. In October, 4,100 MW is scheduled for PPA signing and 1,080 MW for groundbreaking
4. In November, 9,536 MW is scheduled for PPA signing and 1,160 MW for groundbreaking
5. In December, 3,498 MW is scheduled for PPA signing

Meanwhile, several PPAs have been signed for a total capacity of 1,108 MW in the first seven months of the year.

The ministry?s data further reveal that the total capacity of power plants which are expected to enter COD from 2016 through 2019 is 39,157 MW. The breakdown is as follows:
1. In 2016, 4,212 MW is expected to enter COD
2. In 2017, 6,389 MW is expected to enter COD
3. In 2018, 9,237 MW is expected to enter COD
4. In 2019, 19,319 MW is expected to enter COD

The EBTKE further said the government has planned the development of 291 power plant projects with a combined capacity of 35,000, excluding the 7,000 MW projects which are now under construction.

All the 35,000 MW projects need a total estimated investment of US$72.942 billion, excluding the costs for land appropriation, loan interest during construction and taxes.

The projects include the development of 732 transmission lines with 75,000 sets of tower and 1,375 mother stations. The projects need 301,300 km of aluminum conductors, 2,600 sets of transformer, 3.5 million tons of steel.

The projects will create jobs for 650,000 people and indirectly involve 3 million workers with the local content (TKDN) reaching 40 percent or $29.2 billion.
