The Asahan Authority in North Sumatra will immediately offer the development of the Asahan I hydropower plant (185 MW) project to foreign and domestic investors, the Bisnis Indonesia daily said on Friday.
The paper quoted head of the Asahan Authority Saut M.P. Hutauruk as saying that the project must be immediately continued again because North Sumatra could face power shortage in 2002.
The Asahan power project was halted after the country plunged to its deep economic crisis in the middle of 1997.
Former president of the state-owned electricity company PLN Kuntoro Mangkusubroto had said previously that North Sumatra might suffer a 206.3 power deficit in 2002.(*)
