State-owned ferry operator PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) has begun construction of a second berth at Tanjungkalian Port in Mentok, Bangka Belitung Islands, to improve ferry services and ease congestion on the key maritime route linking Bangka Island and Sumatra.

"The construction of Berth II will help address vehicle congestion during long holidays, religious celebrations, and other peak travel periods," ASDP Bangka General Manager Agustinus Cahyo said in Mentok on Thursday.

Cahyo said the project has long been part of ASDP's development plan and is expected to take about eight months to complete.

The new berth is part of the company's broader strategy to enhance port infrastructure, improve service quality, and support regional economic growth.

Construction began in April 2026 and is targeted for completion by November 2026, allowing the facility to support operations from early 2027.

"We are working to complete the project on schedule so that it can begin supporting port operations in early 2027," Cahyo said.

ASDP and its technical team have conducted consultations and outreach activities with stakeholders to ensure the project proceeds smoothly and according to schedule.

The project is being built by PT Nindya Karya. During construction, a series of inspections and tests will be carried out to ensure the facility meets required safety and quality standards.

"The total investment is around Rp60 billion, fully funded by ASDP," Cahyo added.

West Bangka Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) Chairman Badri Syamsu welcomed the project, saying the additional berth would improve ferry services and help reduce recurring congestion during holiday periods.
