State ferry firm PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) has begun the expansion of Tanjung Uban Port in Bintan, Riau Islands, with the construction of a second berth and the upgrading of an existing berth to accommodate growing passenger, vehicle and logistics traffic.
ASDP President Director Heru Widodo said the project includes the construction of a 119.48-meter-long second berth capable of serving vessels of up to 1,000 gross tonnage (GT). The facility will be equipped with an 80-ton movable bridge to support vehicle and passenger loading and unloading operations.
At the same time, ASDP is upgrading Berth 1 to handle vessels of up to 2,000 GT, with the berth length extended to 200.9 meters.
According to Heru, the expansion is intended to address rising mobility and logistics demand across the Riau Islands and improve inter-island connectivity.
ASDP Batam General Manager Reno Yulianto said the company is also rehabilitating Berth 1 at Telaga Punggur Port in Batam to improve safety, comfort and operational efficiency.
Both projects are targeted for completion by the end of 2026.
Tanjung Uban Port currently serves three ferry routes, including the busy Tanjung Uban-Telaga Punggur crossing operated by KMP Tanjung Burang and KMP Baru.
Between January and May 2026, the port handled 301,221 passengers and 131,684 vehicles, providing the basis for the planned capacity expansion.
