Coal demand in Southeast Asia region will grow by 242 million tons between 2015 and 2030 with about half of the growth going to take place in Indonesian domestic market, according to Noble?s medium-term view of Energy Coal.

Gerry Feerick, Director Energy Complex of Noble Resources International Pte Ltd in his presentation at CoalTrans Asia in Bali said that the electricity demand in Southeast Asia would double by 2030 with coal and gas would continue to be the main fuels for electricity generation.

He said that coal demand for the projected 1,560 TWh in ASEAN countries in 2030 would reach 350 million tons, up from 150 million tons in 2015.

In addition to the electricity, the industrial coal demand would also ramp up to 95 million tons in 2030 compared with 64 million tons in 2015.

?Growing domestic demand in Indonesia will increasingly limit availability for the export market,? he said.

He added that Vietnam and Philippines would also become very important markets in ASEAN region in the next 5 years.

Indonesia is expected to build 35 GW of power project plants until 2019.
