ASL Marine said the move was in line with its plan to "reconfigure" its fleet: it wants to own more sophisticated and larger vessels to service marine and offshore infrastructure development as well as oil, gas and energy sectors.
The newly-bought vessels will boost ASL Energy' fleet and strengthen its presence in coal ship chartering business in Indonesia.
The firm, which is equally owned by ASL Marine and Links Island Holdings, now has 12 tugboats and 17 barges, excluding the vessels just bought from ASL Marine. It has planned to have a total of 40 sets of tugboats and barges (40 tugboats and 40 barges).
ASL Energy has secured a US$73 million contract with PT Pelayaran Segara Niaga Utama, to transport a minimum of 30 million tons of coal from Gunung Bayan Group?s concessions in East Kalimantan to the Balikpapan coal terminal over a period of five years starting last September.
In order to meet the contract, ASL Energy has to provide a total of 20 sets of tugboats and barges by end November 2004.
In order maximize the use of its fleet, ASL Energy has bought a majority stake in Tabang coal mining concession in East Kalimantan. This concession is expected to commence shipment of coal in the end of the first half of next year. (robert)
