The Badan Geologi (Geological Agency) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is cooperating with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to enhance geothermal exploration technology in Indonesia.
Badan Geologi?s Head Dr. R. Sukhyar said Indonesia is believed to have geothermal energy potential amounting to 29,000 MW, but only a total of 1,336 MW of it has been developed in eight geothermal power plants.
The main issue for Indonesia is how to enhance the capacity of its human resources to explore and exploit the geothermal energy resources, he said in a speech delivered during the opening of the workshop on geothermal in Bandung on Tuesday.
The workshop titled ?Capacity Building for Enhancement of the Geothermal Exploration Technology in Indonesia? is the second of its kind jointly held by Badan Geologi and JICA as a follow up to a cooperation agreement based on ?the record of discussion? signed in July 2010.
The cooperation agreement that is effective three years from May 2011 through September 2013 covers four areas, that is Preliminary Regional Survey and Introduction of GIS Database, Geothermal Resource Survey for Designating Working Area, Geothermal Resource Development and Knowledge Sharing and Dissemination of Geothermal Development (mostly through seminars).
