President of the state-owned oil and gas firm Pertamina Baihaki Hakim and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro plan to meet with China Prime Minister Zhu Rongji on Dec. 17, a day before the company submitted bid for the supply of LNG (liquefied natural gas) to China?s Guang Dong industrial province.

The Suara Karya daily quoted Baihaki as saying that Purnomo would deliver a personal letter of President Megawati Soekarnoputri to the Chinese PM.

?The timing is very good because on December 18, we will make a bid (for the supply of LNG),? he said.

Guang Dong needs around 3 million tons of LNG per year.

Pertamina will source its LNG from the Tangguh LNG project in Papua province which is operated by BP.

Pertamina is competing with other LNG suppliers including Australia and Malaysia, seen as the toughest competitors.

Earlier, Pertamina said that the company would purchase oil tankers from China in its effort to win the LNG supply contract.(*)
