State-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina said that its Balikpapan refinery upgrade project in East Kalimantan is expected to start construction at the end of February with a ground-breaking ceremony to be led by President Joko Widodo.

Pertamina Director of Petrochemical and Processing Megaproject, Rahmad Hardadi said on Monday that the project is targeted to be completed in 2019.

?At the end of February 2017 there will be a ground-breaking by the President,? he said, adding that the environmental impact assessment (or AMDAL) of the project is targeted to be completed on February 18.

?It (the Balikpapan refinery project) is targeted to be completed in July 2019. Currently site preparation is in progress,? he added.

Pertamina announced in early December it had appointed IDX-listed engineering and construction firm PT Wijaya Karta Tbk (Wika) as contractor for the construction of new jetty and site preparation for its planned Balikpapan refinery upgrade project.
