The 155 MW Bangkanai gas engine power plant has started supplying electricity to Central, South and part of East Kalimantan provinces, initially at a capacity of 25 MW, Kontan reported on Friday.

The paper quoted Djoko Raharjo, Business Director of state-owned power company PT PLN for Kalimantan region as saying that the electricity supply follows the operation of transmission line linking a number of substations in the regions.

He said that the electricity supply is initially limited at 25 MW pending completion of stability and security tests of gas supply from the Kerendan gas plant facility (KGPF).

The KGPF, operated by US-based Ophir Energy plc, started partial supply of gas to the Bangkanai power plant last year pending completion of the required gas transmission line by PLN.

Ophir said in January that PLN is close to complete the final section of a gas transmission line linking the Bangkanai gas engine power plant with the KGPF in Central Kalimantan.

Once the line is completed, gas production is expected to increase to 20 MMscfd, in line with the daily contract quantity (DCQ) as set under a gas sales agreement (GSA) between Ophir and PLN.

Ophir Indonesia (Bangkanai) Ltd holds a 70 percent operating interest in the Kerendan field, Bangkanai PSC, Central Kalimantan, and PT Saka Energi Bangkanai Klemantan holds a 30 percent equity interest. (*)
