Thai firm Banpu PCL announced on Wednesday that its Indonesian coal mines reported strong sale volume of 7.11 million tons with an average coal selling price (ASP) of $70.84 per ton in the first quarter of the year.

All mines generated smooth output despite the rainy season in the first quarter of the year. The resulted sale revenue of $ 513 million marks a decline of 11 percent from the same period of last year when sale volume and ASP were 7.03 million tons and $79.85 per ton respectively, the firm said.

The unfavorable coal market during the past year will continue to pressure ASP over the next few periods. However the production cost has been well-managed as reflected by the 13% decline in average cost of sale to $ 44.78 per ton in this quarter. The gross profit margin (GPM) sustains at a good level of 38% against 33% in last year.

Banpu runs its coal mining business in Indonesia through subsidiaries PT Indo Tambangraya Megah Tbk, which has five coal mine units including PT Indominco Mandiri, PT Trubaindo Coal Mining, PT. Bharinto Ekatama, PT. Kitadin and PT Jorong Barutama Greston.
