Coal mining activity by Thai's Banpu subsidiary PT Indominco Mandiri (IM) has been accused of causing flood in North Bontang and South Bontang areas in East Kalimantan, the local Kaltim Post daily reported Saturday.

The paper quoted MP Simanjuntak, deputy of the Bontang Reform Movement Committee, said that timber cutting at the mining site of IM had been a factor causing flood in Bontang during the past few years.

He said that IM must be responsible for the losses suffered by the Bontang people.

?PT IM must be held responsible. So far the company has always been thinking of profit without taking measures how to overcome the impact of its activity,? Simanjuntak said.

During the past two weeks the North and South Bontang areas had been hit by flood.(*)
