State owned manufacturing firm PT Barata and Russian private firm Power Machine will jointly build a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 3x 135 Megawatt (MW) in West Sumatra, Sindo Daily reported Monday.

Director General for Metal, Machine, and Textiles Industry at the Ministry of Industry Ansari Bukhari said in Jakarta over the weekend that the two companies had signed a cooperation deal to construct power plant .

According to Ansari, the planned power plant project in West Sumatra is categorized a  project proposed by independent power producer/IPP and is thus excluded from state electricity firm’s (PLN) projects to provide additional power supply of 10,000 MW under the government’s fast track program. “The electricity outputs from the IPP will be sold to PLN,” he said.

Ansari added that besides Barata, the Ministry of Industry also asked Power Machine to explore the possibility of collaborating with NTP, a subsidiary of PT Dirgantara . Under the plan, NTP would supply turbine and generator for the development of the coal-fired power plant.

“NTP has just had an initial talk (with Power Machine),” he said. (*)
