Gold mining company PT Barisan Tropical Mining (BTM) in South Sumatra planned to further lay off its workers as the company had to reduce activities following a decrease in gold deposit in its contract area in South Sumatra, Sriwijaya Post reported.

A company manager Djono Safety said on Monday the company would cut 183 of the 290 jobs from the manager level to mining jobs.

It was the second massive layoff conducted by the company over the past one year with the first taking place last July when the company cut 92 jobs.

Djono said the company would hold the layoff on March 15, adding that the workers would receive severance pay in accordance with the length of their working period.

He said the company would retain 107 workers to maintain all the company's facilities.

He denied that the 107 workers would work with Barisan Sumatra Mining, which is a joint venture between BTM and a South African mining company.

He said all the 107 workers who wished to work with the joint venture, had to send applications for the new jobs. (*)
