The Batam city administration in Riau Islands Province plans to develop a waste-fired power plant at the local 46-hectare waste dump site to help deal with city waste problem and increase electricity supply, a local media reported Friday.

The power plant will be built and operated by a third party under a 25-year contract, said Sulaiman Nababan, Head of the Batam Sanitary Office as quoted by Batampos.co.id. ?Batam has a high population growth, so the waste volume keeps increasing,? he said.

He said that the 800 tons of waste produced by local households and industries each day can potentially produce 10 MW electricity. ?PLN has agreed to buy the electricity,? he said.

He said that tender process for the project is still in progress, participated by four investors from Japan and China. (*)
