More than a thousand of residents from several districts in Bekasi rallied in front of the local legislative council (DPRD) on Thursday, demanding the state owned oil and gas company Pertamina to build a gas processing plant near its gas wells in Babelan district, Neraca reported on Friday.

During a meeting with the local legislators, the residents? representatives said that Pertamina should build its gas processing plant in the area in a bid to help cope with the growing unemployment.

At present Pertamina sends the gas it produces from the Babelan district to a processing plant in other area. ?The gas delivery is mostly involved workers from outside the district. This has caused jealousy among residents,? one of the protesters said. (*)
