A waste-based power plant (PLTSa) project at the Bantargebang landfill in Bekasi, West Java Province, is expected to be completed at the end of March this year.

The project, seen as a pilot waste-to-energy project in Indonesia, is a cooperation between the Jakarta provincial administration and the Agency for the Development and Application of Technology (or BPPT), which provides the thermal technology to process city waste into electricity.

News portal kompas.com quoted Head of the Environmental Office at the Jakarta provincial administration, Isnawa Adji as saying Monday that construction progress of the project has now reached nearly 90 percent, and is expected to be completed at the end of March 2019.

Isnawa was speaking to reporters following a visit to the project site with BPPT Head Hamman Riza. Hammam said that the agency applies thermal technology at the Bantargebang PLTSa which can process up to 100 tons of waste per day, and able to produce electricity up to 700 kW.

He said that the Bantargebang PLTSa is a pilot project that can be replicated in other cities to help resolve the mounting waste problem. He said that BPPT is ready to supply its thermal technology for similar project in other cities. (*)
