Berau Coal opens new mine

PT United Tractors said Monday said its coal-mining subsidiary PT Berau Coal earlier this month had commenced coal mining in a new mine in Sambarata, East Kalimantan with a total reserve of 90 million tons.
The 15,600-hectare minefield, estimated to contain 90 million metric tons of coal reserves, should produce 1.2 million tons this year, raising to 2 million in 2002.
Berau Coal has built a coal processing mill and a terminal accessible to large ships and barges, it said.
The company said in last year, it produced some 5 million tonnes of coal both for local and export.
According to the company's website, Berau Coal is owned by PT Astra International's United Tractor (60 percent), PT Pandu Dian Pertiwi (10 percent), Armadian Tritunggal (10 percent) and Japan's Nissho Iwai (10 percent). (alex)
