Berau Coal production jumps to 4.8 million ton in 2000

Coal mining company PT Berau Coal, in East Kalimantan, produced some 4.8 million tons coal in 2000 compared to 3.3 million tons in 1999, company president Jeffrey Mulyono said.
Jeffrey was quoted by the local Kaltim Post daily as saying that Berau Coal had managed to survive the country's economic crisis.
He said that the crisis that started in the middle of 1997 had seriously affected the company at the time. The paper did not explain details of the impact of the crisis.
Jeffrey said that Berau Coal has already managed to export some of its products to Asia including to Philippines and China, and recently to Chile.
Berau controls around 500 hectare mining site in Lati village in Berau and started commercial production in 1994. The company operates open pit mining.(*)
