East Kalimantan-based coalminer PT Berau Coal has improved its coal production to 3.53 million tons in the first half this year from 3.22 million tons in the same period last year.

?From January to June, Berau produced 3,530,666 tons of coal,? corporate secretary Ratmono Ratmansunu told Petromindo.Com on Friday.

Berau?s first quarter production dropped to 1.49 million due to heavy rain that hit its mining concession area. Production bounced back to its normal level of around 2 million tons in the second quarter.

Ratmono said Berau had also revised down this year?s production target from around 8 million tons to 7.2 million tons.

Berau Coal, 60 percent owned by heavy equipment maker United Tractors, is one of Indonesia?s major coal producer, operating coalmines in Berau Regency in East Kalimantan. Berau produced 6.9 million tons of coal in 2002. (godang)
