Berau to adopt UBC technology to upgrade coal quality

Tuesday, March 27 2001 - 04:00 AM WIB

The Berau district in East Kalimantan will adopt the Upgrading Brown Coal (UBC) technology in a bid to help improve the quality of its coal product, according to an official.

Wisnu Harris of the local mining office said that Japan's Kobelco would introduce the UBC technology to the area.

Wisnu said that the relatively poor quality of the coal products from the Berau district had made the area to be unable to tap the opportunity provided by the international coal market.

According to a study, the UBC technology could increase the calorie of Berau coal from the current 5.318 to 7,275. (Amoros)
