IDX-listed coal mining firm PT Berau Coal Energy Tbk plans to increase coal output this year by 28.85 percent to 33.5 million tons from 26 million tons last year, Kontan reported on Monday.
The paper quoted Berau Media Relations Officer Farhan Soeprapto as saying that the higher production target was made in light of recent recovery in the price of the commodity.
He said that the coal will be produced from its mines in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan, including Lati, Binungan, and Sambarata.
Farhan said that the company exports most of its coal as only small part of the output is suitable for domestic power plant. Berau produces coal mostly with calorific value of 4,500 kcal/kg.
Asked about the possibility of entering the power generation business, Farhan said that there is such possibility, although it would not be in the near term. ?It could be in the medium or long-term,? he said. (*)
