BHP Billiton to terminate S. Kalimantan coal operations

South Kalimantan coal unit of Australian resources company BHP Billiton PT BHP Kendilo Coal Indonesia is scheduled to terminate its operations in June 2002 due to resource depletion, according to an executive.

?Initially we hope to be able to extend the mine?s life as we had identified new resources within our concession area, however, the resource proved to be uneconomic,? Sonny Pangestu, the company?s external relations manager told Petromindo.com Tuesday.

Sonny said currently reclamation works in mine location had been carried cout.

BHP Kendilo is a small size coalmine firm with average production capacity of 1 million tons per annum.

BHP Billiton owns 80 percent of the BHP Kendilo, while Japan trading powerhouse Mitsui holds the remaining 20 percent. (godang)
